How to Write an Exemplification Essay – It’s All about the Examples

Exemplify – to be a typical example. This is the root word in the term “exemplification.” So, exemplification means to provide examples of something. This pretty much gets us to an answer to the question, what is an exemplification essay?

The exemplification essay is one in which you will use examples to provide evidence or to “prove” a thesis statement. It is not a type of essay, such as expository, descriptive, narrative, or persuasive. Rather, it is a method that is used in many types of essays.

Exemplification in Types of Essays

Here are some sample topics for each type of essay that would be developed through exemplification.

  1. Definition Essay:

You topic might be “democratic socialism.” You might begin with a general thesis statement that this type of governing structure is one in which the government cares for the social, educational, and health needs of its populace. You would then provide examples, perhaps from a country like Germany, of each need and how the government provides for it. For example, education is funded by the government from early childhood through college and graduate programs, and it is free to all of its children and youth.

  1. Comparison/Contrast Essay:

A couple of topic idea might be hoarding vs. collecting or online vs traditional education. Your body paragraphs would then provide examples of how these things are alike and how they are different.

  1. Persuasive Essay:

Suppose you chose the topic/thesis that discrimination is still alive and well in America. Your body paragraphs would provide examples of discrimination

You might choose the topic/thesis, climate change is real. You would then need to provide scientifically based examples of climate change to convince your reader.

  1. Expository Essay:

These essays are explanatory, so you will not be taking a particular point-of-view. Rather, you will be showing by example. Here are a few topics:

  • Strange foods that people eat
  • Annoying commercials
  • Product placement in movies and TV shows
  • Platform of the Tea Party
  • Impact of Internet commerce on brick and mortar stores
  1. Literary Analysis Essays:

Many students wonder how to write an exemplification essay related to a piece of literature. These are perhaps the easiest to organize and produce. Here are a couple of sample topics ideas:

  • Write a characterization essay. You will be identifying specific traits of a character. The next step is to find examples of behavior or words that demonstrate those traits.
  • An essay on the theme of a novel would involve examples of the author’s depiction of that theme through events or characters.

Often, students are given essay tests. And the questions may contain a statement at the end that says, “Provide examples to support your opinion.” If you know how to write essay pieces that use the exemplification methods, you should have no problem organizing your examples. These types of essays almost write themselves, because, once you have your thesis statement, it is a matter of providing examples, each of which will comprise a body paragraph.
