How to Write an English Term Paper: A Guide for Beginners

If you’ve never written a term paper before, it can be a bit intimidating to complete the task. Traditionally, a term paper is written over the course of a semester, but many instructors use the term fairly loosely these days. It is a written analysis of a subject that directly relates to material that is covered in the classroom during the semester. Obviously in this case, it would involve writing English papers. Learning how to write an English term paper is something that is best accomplished by following a step by step process. This will allow you to tackle this large project in more manageable pieces, making learning how to write a term paper much easier. Please feel free to refer to this guide whenever you need a refresher.

Step 1: Selecting a Topic or Area of Focus

Selecting a topic for a term paper is not exactly the same as selecting a topic for other types of papers. In an English class, your instructor may expect you to write an ongoing analysis of all the material covered during the semester, finding ways to connect each topic with the next. Another possibility is that you will be asked to choose a single item that is covered as the focus of your term paper. The final possibility is that you are allowed to select a topic on your own, as long as you can show that it relates to the class in some way. If you are given the opportunity to select your own topic, choose one that interests you, and that you are certain you can use for an entire term paper.

Step 2: Material Selection and Review

The next step in writing a term paper, is selecting and reviewing the materials you will use to do your research. If your term paper is one a subject or subjects covered in the classroom, then your resource materials will simply be the items you review throughout the term. This will include, handouts, presentations, textbooks, classroom notes, study guides, etc. If you are working on a topic or focus area of your choosing, then you will need to find resource materials through standard channels and then review those materials as part of your research.

Step 3: Creating an Outline

An outline is simply a way of adding some organization to the notes you have taken throughout the term or during your research. If you would prefer to use a method other than writing a traditional outline, you may want to consider using mind mapping. This is another way to organize thoughts and ideas, and to determine which things will work best for you. You can use mind mapping techniques with a pen and paper, or you can find a mind mapping app.

Step 4: Writing the Rough Draft

At this point, there isn’t much different between an English term paper and any other term paper. In fact, the rest of this process works much like writing any essay or research paper. Simply refer back to your outline or mind map to help you write your rough draft

Step 5: Producing the Final Draft and Bibliography

Your final step is to edit and modify your English term paper until you feel as if it is ready to turn in. While you are doing this, don’t forget to complete your bibliography or works cited paper. Finally, if you need term paper help, please contact a representative at for assistance.
