Differences of U.S., U.K., and CA Educational Systems

Content differences of u.s. u.k. and ca educational systems

Both the U.S. and the U.K. are homes to the top 200 universities in the world. They all have a rich tradition of quality higher education, great facilities for reseacrhes, and a whole culture of academic freedom. Nevertheless, these countries differ a lot when it comes to their systems of education. On the other hand, while the U.S. and Canada practically share the same international border, the same cannot be said about their educational systems. This article will explore the primary differences of these educational systems to guide students from all over the globe who are seeking to enroll in these countries.

Length of Time

In the U.S., it takes about four years to finish a Bachelor’s degree, two years for a Master’s, and around five to seven years or longer for a Doctorate. In the U.K., it only takes three years to finish a Bachelor’s, a year for a Master’s, and three years for a Doctorate. In Canada, they offer two kinds of Bachelor’s degree: either a three-year Bachelor’s degree program or a four-year Honours Bachelor’s degree program.

Academic Term

In the U.S., the semester system is used in most schools although some use a trimester or quarter system. They usually start in the second half of August and finish in May. It is practically the same in the U.K. but the academic year varies by university. In the Canada, the academic year usually starts from the beginning of September until the end of April or even May. In winter, the session is devided into two terms from September to December and from January to April. Various summer studies are also offering between May to August.

University Organization

In the U.S., universities are divided into separate schools by the subject however these schools do not have a lot of independence from the university. In the U.K., the different colleges under a university are fairly independent of one another. It is quite different in Canada in a sense that a college denotes an institution that is vocational, technical, or pre-collegiate. On the other hand, its universities are mostly public institutions.

Style of Education

Subjects in the U.S. are more varied where the liberal arts program is quite popular among students, who may study outside of their majors. In the U.K., students only take classes in their respective colleges. In Canada, education is within the provincial jurisdiction where the curriculum is overseen by the province.

Cost

The cost of education both in the U.S. and the U.K. is very expensive although the level of education in the U.S. is generally higher. Universities in England charge up to $14,300 per year while American universities charge from $29,000 up to $50,000 per year for a private four-year institution. Finances are a major incentive in Canada as it only charges a little over $5,000 per year.

Accommodation

Both U.S. and U.K. provide residence halls in which students can live during their stay in the university. Dormitories available in the U.S. are usually shared with a roommate where dormitories in the U.K. are usually not shared. Off-campus housing is occasionally available in the U.S. but is generally available in the U.K. Universities in Canada usually contract families to host and welcome international students although dormitories are available, too, located close to the campus with shared kitchen, baths, and toilets. Off-campus housing can be an alternative although it is quite a luxury.
